Mortar matching for restoration, historic preservation, or additions to historic buildings normally starts with an analysis of the mortar to be matched to determine ingredients and performance characteristics. A formula for new mortar is then prepared that will match color, aggregate-to-cement ratio, lime content, strength, and water vapor permeability of the original.
